Today we started off talking about ‘what ifs’ and those niggling worries we all wake up with in the middle of the night. “What if I forget my homework” or “What if I come in to class in fancy dress and no one else is?” Fourth class came up with some great silly and serious what if’s. We then read a poem by Shel Silverstein called What if which starts Last night while I lay thinking here,/ some Whatifs crawled inside my ear/ and pranced and partied all night long and sang their same old Whatif song…
Now it was time to come up with our own poems. We set about writing out some Whatif sentences. Once we had five or six written in our roughwork jotters we worked on rhyming words and then came up with wild and wonderful Whatifs and wrote out our paired lines – the results were fantastic.
Some people did the ‘What ifs’ of a baby, of a puppy and even a super Mario toy as well their
own ‘what ifs’
Everyone was a bit wriggly after the long weekend but after listening to everyone’s what if poems, we then worked in groups to choose and perform poems. After just ten minutes of planning and rehearsing groups came up with terrific readings which we will work on in our next session. Everyone came up with ways to make their performing poem better and had great suggestions about actions they could do next time. I am looking forward to putting some of these performances up on the blog after the next session.
