Session 7 – Wednesday 19th March
In session six, last week, we explored more sound effect work, particularly sound-scapes using only voices and foley effects. Each group had a title such At The Circus or At The Beach and their challenge was to create a short drama without any words or dialogue being used at all.
We listened to each group’s piece with our eyes closed and they were all highly evocative and imaginative – particularly the breaking off and eating of a piece of chocolate.
This week we came back to our drama about nine-year old Ruth and her eight-five year old grandma Yvette and their plan to steal a plane and fly to Alaska.
We tried out an upturned bike (Miss Lawlor’s), with playing cards in the spokes to make the various sounds of a small propeller plane.
Then the girls went back into their groups and came up with their own versions of scene 2 – At The Airport. We talked about all the sights and sounds in the airport and how to help the radio audience know where the characters were. We also talked about the problems Ruth and Yvette would have to overcome to get through the security, onto the airfield and into a plane. Each group came up with their own ingenious and highly devious methods.
